Teaming up with OCR to deliver a digital education.

With an estimated shortfall of STEM workers in the UK that numbers as high as 40,000 each year, the skills gap is a problem that won’t solve itself. At Fujitsu, we’re committed to tackling this issue – and today we’ve taken another step forward.

Future members of the digital workforce will need to know not just how the technical nuts and bolts fit together, but how their use will affect businesses on a wider scale too.

Working directly with OCR one of the UK’s most prominent awarding bodies, we’ve designed a new project for the syllabus of the Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma in IT.

The bespoke project was in development for twelve months and was officially announced at the annual BETT 2017 conference at ExCeL London, where the world’s cutting edge education technology goes on show each year.
The vocational qualification is equivalent to an A-Level and is all about teaching students to apply their knowledge of ICT, technology and mathematics to real world situations.

Learning from the real world, for the real world

The syllabus has an eye on the future and promotes thinking and problem solving that relates to an increasingly digitised work environment.

This is key, as future members of the digital workforce will need to know not just how the technical nuts and bolts fit together, but how their use will affect businesses on a wider scale too.
As well as collaborating with OCR, we enrolled the help of some of the university students who are currently taking a year out from their studies to gain hands-on industry experience at Fujitsu.

The next generation

Having their insight has proved invaluable: they are literally the next generation of STEM professionals and, as a result, some of the best-placed people to ask about what they’d like to get from their education!

With help from members of Fujitsu’s Distinguished Engineer community, the students were able to design a project that touches on challenges including how to make the most of data generated by the IoT, and what it takes to make the banking and finance sector ‘smarter’.
Our recent Fit for Digital report found that 52% of C-suite execs can’t see their organisation existing in its current form in the next five years. The transformative power of digitisation is the predominant reason for this sentiment.

Future proof studies

Delivering a digital education, then, is more vital than ever – we’re proud to be working with an industry leader in education to make sure that happens.
